Obituary

Bonnie Ballard Henson, 88, passed away peacefully at her home in Minor on Thursday, December 26, 2024.

Bonnie leaves behind her son, Scott Phillip Henson (Karen), and daughter, Cindy Henson Young (Mike). She is also survived by her five cherished grandchildren: Sarah Beth (Brandon), Katie, Anna (Cody), Kaylie (Ryan), and Holly, as well as her four beloved great-grandchildren: Jackson, Davis, Grace, and Violet.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 62 years, Phillip R. Henson, her parents, Audrey and Scott Ballard, and her brother, Robert "Bob" Ballard.

Bonnie was born on October 24, 1936, in Birmingham, Alabama. She attended Minor High School, where she met the love of her life, Phil, during a school trip to Washington, D.C. They married in 1954 at Mulga First Baptist Church, beginning a lifelong partnership of loving dedication.

After high school, Bonnie briefly attended Auburn University before joining Phil at his U.S. Army postings in New Jersey and El Paso, Texas. It was in El Paso that their first child, Scott, was born. The family soon returned to Minor, where they welcomed Cindy and built the home that Bonnie and Phil shared for more than 50 years.

Bonnie took immense pride in her home and family. She was a den mother for the local Cub Scout troop and took an active role in her children's sports and community activities. The local neighborhood knew her for her love of Halloween and for the elaborate haunted houses that she hosted every year. In her retirement, she enjoyed researching her family history and traveling with Phil and their friends, the late Dave and Pauline Lather. Most of all, she adored spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as her beloved cat, Stranger.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, December 30th at 2:00 PM at Highland Memorial Gardens.
