Obituary

Clayton Howard McKay, age 91, left for his Heavenly Home, Sunday, November 30, 2014, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Carbon Hill, AL., February 27, 1922 to George C. and Victoria Miles McKay. He moved to Birmingham at age 15. He attended Minor High School and later graduated at Vallejo, Calif. Jr. College. He joined the U. S. Navy in 1940 and was serving on the Battle Ship "Tennessee" at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed. He later served on the "Betelgeuse", which transported troops & supplies throughout WWII, in both the Pacific and Atlantic. He served another two years in the Navy during the Korean War. He was employed as an Electrician at U.S. Steel for 38 years. Clayton was a long time member of Central Park United Methodist Church, serving on Administrative Board, Trustee, Asst. to the Sunday School Supt., and member of Finance Comm. He helped set up the Archives and History Room. He was preceded in death by parents, two sisters Verna Stovall, Verla Nichols, three brothers G.C., Bobby Joe, and Rev. Charles McKay. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Rochelle Simmons McKay, two daughters Sharon McKay Jewett of Vail, CO., Reba McKay Phillips of Ormond Bch., FL., two grandsons Adam Phillips, Clearwater, FL., Clay Jewett, Vail, CO., one sister Mary H. Quade, Bessemer, AL., one brother Jerry Tim McKay, Santee, S.C. Visitation will be 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 4th at Bell Funeral Home Forestdale Chapel. Funeral to follow at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Bobby Scales officiating. Burial will follow at Midway Cemetery. Bell Funeral Home Forestdale directing.
