Don was born March 14, 1933 to Ruel and Lucille Miles Baker in Crumly's Chapel. Alabama. He was preceded in death by sisters Brusie Edgil, Peggy Scott, and June Stewart. He attended Marion Military Institute, Auburn University, and the University of Alabama. He served his country as a M.P. in Germany during the Korean War. In the early 60's, Don was a salesman for Jackson Industries. Later in the decade, Don and partner Clyde Seagers purchased Schwaha Machine in Brighton and success necessitated and a move to Dolomite. Through the 70's Schwaha Machine did the large majority of tool and dye work for U.S. Steel's Fairfield Works; in the early 80's, production ceased. Don was looking at a new opportunity for Schwaha, and Longwall mining from England was being introduced into the Jim Walters mines. Don felt like it was a great fit for Schwaha and researched the manufacturing process in England. The shop was modified to accommodate the fabrication of Longwall cutter drums and the name was changed to Longwall Products. Drums that were built in Dolomite changed the way coal was cut and extracted from the mines of Alabama, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Don was a devoted member of Crumly's Chapel United Methodist Church, the Forestdale Lion's Club, and served on the Forestdale Fire Board.
