Donald Ray Gaskey, age 86, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2024. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Donald's life was marked by his devotion to family, service, and his love for the outdoors.
A proud Air Force veteran, Donald served his country with honor before beginning a long and successful career with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, where he worked for 35 years. His work ethic and commitment to providing for his family were evident in all aspects of his life.
Donald had a deep love for fishing, often spending hours on the water with his close friends. He found great joy in these moments, sharing laughter and stories with his buddies. Above all, he cherished his family, and he worked tirelessly to ensure they were cared for and supported.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Patricia Gaskey, his son, Rex Gaskey (Tommie), daughters Donna Wright (Bo), Tracy Bittle (Mark), and Wendy Clark, as well as his grandchildren Chris Wright, Erica Wright, Justin Wright, Emily Wright, Erin Wills (Matt), Brad Bittle (Candace), Mackenzie Clark, Madison Deerman (Trenton), and Blake Clark. Donald was also a proud great-grandfather to Chase Bittle and Tyson Green. He is also survived by his sister, Gail Burr (James), sister-in-law, Cheryl Davis, and a host of nieces, nephews, and many special friends, including Calvin and Ann Tolbert, who shared 73 years of friendship with him.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Bessie Gaskey, brothers Howard (Bug) Gaskey and Billy Joe Gaskey, and his great-grandson Odin Wright. He was also preceded by nieces Jill Connor and Amy Davis, nephew Barry Graybeal, and his sisters-in-law and brother-in-law.
A funeral service to celebrate Donald's life will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Bell Forestdale Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial to follow at Bivens Chapel Cemetery. Rev. Todd Burr will be officiating
Donald's legacy of love, strength, and dedication will be remembered by all who knew him. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
