Obituary

Dorothy Lightfoot Varnon, age 93, passed away on December 10, 2021. She is now in the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Born September 25, 1928, Mrs. Varnon was the third of six children born to the late Sarah Elizabeth Adams Lightfoot and John William Lightfoot. She was the beloved wife of the late Earl Milton Varnon. Mrs. Varnon was a proud graduate of the Ensley High School class of 1946 where she played the viola in the EHS orchestra. In addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Varnon was predeceased by her sister, Frances, her brothers, Jesse, Charles, and Frank. She is also predeceased by her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lucille Gregory Varnon and Joseph Carroll Varnon, sister-in-law Ann Carroll Varnon, and brother-in-law James Lewis Prince. Mrs. Varnon is survived by her children, Susan Davis, Judy Mathews (Richard), and Stanley Varnon (Tamara), grandchildren Barron Melton (Mary), Jennifer Tennant (Michael), and Emily Baker (Austin), great-grandchildren include Emma Gray Tennant, Jack Ebert Tennant, William Mathews Baker, and Wyatt Beau Baker. Mrs. Varnon is survived by her two sisters, Florine Body, Shirley Prince, and sister-in-law Christine Norman Lightfoot and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Varnon grew up in Birmingham and met the love of her life, Earl Varnon, at Ensley High School. They married in 1946 and moved to the community of Sandusky in the early 1950's where her husband's family lived. She considered the most important things in her life to be her God, her family, and her church, the Sandusky United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School in her younger years and served as President of the United Methodist women for twenty years until the church closed in 2017. During the 1960's Mrs. Varnon served as the Girl Scout leader for Troop 512 in Sandusky. She touched the lives of many Girl Scouts during those years and loved her involvement in scouting. Because Mr. Varnon was an avid fisherman, they began Varnon Bait Company, Inc. in the early 1960's. Together they manufactured artificial plastic fishing lures known as Red's Worms and spinner bait known as The Yellow Jacket. After Mr. Varnon died in 1989, Mrs. Varnon continued operating the company until closing it in 2008. Mrs. Varnon was the definition of humility, always putting everyone before herself and living, a selfless life. She did for others in a quiet way whenever she saw a need. She never said any unkind word and she smiled with her whole heart. Mrs. Varnon had a wonderful life and lived it to the fullest. The family extends a very special thank you to the entire staff of Legacy Ridge Assisted Living in Trussville where Mrs. Varnon has lived for six years. She was treated with love, care, dignity, and respect by each employee.

A private service for family will be held with burial at Crestview Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that donations be made in memory of Mrs. Dorothy Lightfoot Varnon to Children's Fresh Air Farm, 501 Park Avenue, Birmingham, AL 35226. As children, Mrs. Varnon and her siblings attended The Children's Fresh Air Farm as campers and dearly loved spending summers there. The memories of Mrs. Varnon's experiences there lasted a lifetime.
