Obituary

On December 4, 2021, Imogene Leonard Armstrong went to be with her Heavenly Father and is now having a joyous reunion beyond our comprehension.

Imogene Armstrong was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on May 8, 1923. She grew up with her two brothers, Eldridge and Norman, and sister, Evelyn, in Sandusky and lived there until she was 95. On September 6, 1941, Imogene married James Troy (JT) Armstrong. They kept their roots and started their family in Sandusky.

JT and Imogene had three daughters, Sheila, Annita, and Lisa. Their legacy extended to include six (6) grandchildren, eleven (11) great grandchildren, and one (1) great great granddaughter. Although Imogene was her given name at birth, she will be most dearly be remembered as "Mothers." She was a mother to her daughters, but her motherly interactions went well beyond her children. She loved all of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was known for "stay all nights", grilled cheese sandwiches, and giving advice like "both hands on the wheel", "sit up straight", or "don't curse." Any time she saw one of the kids, she was engaged, and usually laughing and smiling. With no smart phone to distract her, the grandkids always had her attention, and these memories are priceless and go beyond any material possession.

Imogene Armstrong loved her church family at Sandusky United Methodist Church. The same church her mother, Florence Arra Taylor Leonard, attended. Imogene was an active member there until it closed its doors in 2017.

With over 98 years on this Earth, she lived through times that many only know through history books. As a young girl, her family lived through the Great Depression, and she, like so many other women of the World War II era, took a job at Redstone Arsenal and did her part to keep our country running. She did not have to read about history, because she lived it.

With a life so well lived, it is difficult to list everything wonderful about her, but beautiful, funny, brave, curious, imaginative, one of a kind and loved are just the beginnings of the words that describe her, but "strong" was one of the most common. She was strong and lived independently for over 40 years after JT passed. She was strong in her faith, and her love for her family was strong. Although sometimes unassuming, her strength was a character trait that helped her live a long and blessed life, and she was strong even in her last days.

Imogene Leonard Armstrong is preceded in death by her mother and father, William Arthur Leonard and Flora Arra Taylor Leonard; husband, James Troy (JT) Armstrong; her brothers, Eldridge Leonard and Norman Leonard; sister, Evelyn Leonard Bush; son-in-laws, George G. Ashworth, Robert Stanley McGuire, and Ron Corley; grandchildren, David Ashworth, Natalie Ashworth, and Eric Ashworth; and great grandson, James Thomas (JT) Bishop.

She is survived by her daughters, Sheila Ashworth, Nita McGuire, and Lisa Corley; grandchildren, Chris (Desiree) Ashworth, Corrie (Jason) Merchant, Bretta (Jason) Brooks, Gina (Mark) Bishop, Sheri (Beau) Powers, and Elizabeth Griffin; great grandchildren, Danielle Ashworth, Savanah Ashworth, Mac Brooks, Sam Brooks, Luke Bishop, Audrey Bishop, George Merchant, Arra Merchant, Silas Powers, Cheyenne Powers and Imogene Johnson; and great great granddaughter, Eila Burrell. She is also survived by many of her loving nieces and nephews.

The family would like to say a special thank you to all of the caregivers at Legacy Ridge Assisted Living in Trussville that helped Mrs. Armstrong over the last three years.

A private service for family will be held with burial at Crumly Chapel United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that donations be made to Trussville First United Methodist Church.
