In Loving Memory of Mary Evelyn Howard Ellis
March 31, 1928 – October 24, 2026
Mary Evelyn Howard Ellis, affectionately known to all who loved her as “Tootsie,” of Adamsville, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at the remarkable age of 98. Born on March 31, 1928, Mary lived a long and beautiful life filled with love, faith, hard work, and devotion to her family. Her gentle spirit, caring heart, and the countless memories she created will forever be treasured by those blessed to have known her.
Tootsie was a woman of remarkable strength, determination, and unwavering love for her family. Throughout her life, she was no stranger to hard work, having held several jobs over the years. She took great pride in everything she did and found happiness in life's simple pleasures. Whether she was tending to her grapevines, caring for her peach trees, or admiring her beautiful roses, Mary had a special love for working in her yard. She had a way of nurturing the things around her, and much like the flowers she so lovingly tended, the love she planted in the hearts of others will continue to bloom for generations to come.
Mary was also a wonderful cook, and her kitchen was undoubtedly a place where love was shared and memories were made. She had a special talent for embroidery, a passion she lovingly passed along to her niece. These simple but meaningful moments reflected the kind of woman Tootsie was—someone who found joy in sharing her talents, her time, and her love with others.
Above all, Mary's life was rooted in her faith and her family. She faithfully served for many years in Sunday School at Midway Methodist Church, touching lives through her dedication and love for the Lord. In her later years, she became a faithful member of Arley Methodist Church, where she formed many cherished friendships. Her Christian faith was an important part of who she was, and she leaves behind a beautiful example of service, kindness, and devotion.
Tootsie wore many titles throughout her 98 years—loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and dear friend. Yet, no title could fully describe the love she gave or the difference she made in the lives of those around her. Her family was one of her greatest blessings, and the generations that follow her are a beautiful reflection of the legacy she leaves behind.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert C. “Bob” Ellis; her mother, Alma “Lula” Evelyn Elizabeth Busby Howard; her father, Charles Howard Sr.; and her sister, Margaret “Bobbie” Smith; brother-in-law, Watson Smith; and sister-in-law, Ivy Howard.
Left to cherish her precious memory are her loving children, Robin Ellis (Sandra) and Cathy Ellis Stone (Randy); her grandchildren, Monica Stone, Nathan Stone (Kayla), Corey Ellis (Brittany), Adam Howell (Ashley), and Krystle Phillips (Eric); her great-grandchildren, Koltyn Shores, Bexley Phillips, Pierson Ellis, Rowan Ellis, and Tripp Ellis; and her great-great-granddaughter, Arabella Shores.
She is also survived by her brothers, Charles “Bubba” Howard Jr. and Tommy Arwood (Pat), along with countless nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives have been enriched by knowing her.
Funeral services for Mary Evelyn Howard Ellis will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Midway Methodist Church in Adamsville, Alabama. Visitation for friends will begin one hour prior to the service, at 12:00 noon. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Southeastern Hospice, with special thanks to her dedicated caregivers, Jordan Wilson, Emma Bobo, Jordan Evans, Angie Slate, and Nashawn Collins. Your kindness, compassion, and loving care during Mary's final days will never be forgotten. The family is deeply grateful for the comfort and dignity you provided.
Though Tootsie's earthly journey has come to an end, the love she planted throughout her lifetime will continue to grow in the hearts of her family and friends. Every blooming rose, every treasured family recipe, every carefully stitched piece of embroidery, and every precious family gathering will serve as a gentle reminder of a life so beautifully lived.
A life of 98 years. A legacy of love spanning five generations. A faith that carried her through a lifetime.
Tootsie, you were loved beyond words, and you will be missed beyond measure. Your work here is done, but the beautiful legacy you leave behind will live on forever.
