Obituary

Michael Allsup, 66, died December 16, 2021 in Birmingham. He is survived by his wife Julia McNair, his sons Henry, William, Joseph and Clinton and his brother Jimmy Allsup of Pascagoula, Mississippi, along with cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Loren Clinton Allsup, Jr., and his mother, Helen Cora Bryant Allsup.
Visitation with the family will be Monday, December 20, 2021 at Shades Valley Lutheran Church in the Sanctuary, from 5 until 8 pm. A graveside service is planned for a later date at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo.
Michael grew up in Hokes Bluff, AL, and graduated from Hokes Bluff High School. He graduated from the University of Alabama for both undergrad and law school.
He was an attorney and proud to be a trial lawyer. He had over 40 years of experience and believed strongly in helping those injured in the wrongful conduct of others. He was a veteran of the US Army, Judge Advocate General's Corps. After leaving the army, he practiced with several firms, working on complex civil litigation with an emphasis on civil rights.
As a lawyer, his i's were precisely dotted and his t's were perfectly crossed. His legal pads would be filled with doodles, but he got the law right. Once a judge raised the ire of a defense lawyer when he said "well if Allsup wrote it, I know I can trust it" and that led to a deep chuckle, his highest praise.
Late in his life, he took to wearing what he called "my wacky socks" and you never knew what they were going to be - bright colors and patterns and every combination imaginable.
He was most fond of his olive green socks, worn with his official Boy Scout uniform. His joy was seeing boys enjoy scouting as much as he had. He served on many committees, including the Vulcan District Eagle Scout Board of Review, but his love was Troop 95. When Henry joined Troop 95 he became first an Assistant Scoutmaster and then Scoutmaster, and he celebrated 50 years of being an Eagle Scout while being their Scoutmaster. He stayed active with the Troop and with Scouts as long as he could.
He had many passions in his life, including all things World War II, anything about the Titanic, the Apollo space program, and the weather. He was a licensed Amateur Radio Operator (WB4LXP) since 1970, a hobby he shared with his father. He learned to fly and had a motorcycle. He was active with The American Legion, and many other Veteran groups.
Friends and family are remembering him for his gentle nature and kindness.
There is no way for us to adequately thank everyone who has helped us through this journey. Dr. Grant Williams and his team were kind and caring, as were all of the people we encountered at UAB in the emergency department and through palliative care. The people at The Webb School who have cared for Henry and made sure he was with Michael at the end will be forever in our hearts. The family we gained from Highlands School are our rock.
In particular, we must thank Liesel French, Connie Hill and Kim Daigle and their sons Edward, Aubrey and Gordon. The boys have been friends since kindergarten and their mothers have helped through every step. Before we knew what we needed, they were there for us. Everyone should be so lucky to have friends like this.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Boy Scouts of Alabama. Additionally, an education fund is being established for Henry.
