Obituary

Patrick Robert Dunwoody Cumbie was born February 17, 1942 and passed away on February 10, 2022 at the age of 79.

Patrick was born in Harmon, AL, and grew up mainly in Wicksburg, AL.  Since his father was principal of the school in Wicksburg and his mother a teacher there, much of his life in Wicksburg and the lives of his whole family were devoted to the school.  Those in Wicksburg knew him as Robert.  After graduation, he went to Troy to college, where he got his B.A. in secondary education to teach math and science.  He taught in schools in Georgia, Florida, and Alabama.  Later, he obtained a Master's degree in Mathematics.  He was an adjunct instructor at Jeff State for many years while also teaching in classrooms and eventually working in the offices of the Birmingham City Schools.

Patrick was an avid reader.  Anyone who spent time with his family would assume this was a genetic trait of the Cumbiefamily.  Patrick loved to learn and was always seeking knowledge of new things.  The store of knowledge he had was immense, making him a person that many people loved to spend time talking with.  One of his many interests was of the PuebloIndians.  One of his adventures was to collect at least one piece of pottery from each of the nineteen pueblos.  Of course, with most of them, he wasn't able to stop with one piece, so he obtained a relatively large collection.  Patrick enjoyed spending time in peaceful places and found the mountains to be one of those places.  He found camping at the Grand Canyon another, especially since he could visit some of the Indian reservations between here and there.

Patrick was baptized into the Orthodox Church in 1976 and chose St. Patrick, Enlightener of Ireland as his patron saint.  He took that name to be his own at that time

He was preceded in death by his Parents, B. D. & Edith Cumbie and Sister, Janette Chalker.

He is survived by his Wife, Marie Cumbie; Daughters, Sarah Elizabeth Cumbie and Whitney Maria Bickerstaff (John); Sister, Charlotte Doster; Brothers, Richard (Becky) Cumbie and Ben (Margie) Cumbie and Two Grandsons, Damian and Jeremiah Askew.
