Obituary

Nettie Vernell Elizabeth Jackson Payne, 96, of Alliance, Alabama, previously from Forestdale, Alabama, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 17, 2020. Vernell was born on February 13, 1924 in Walker County, Alabama, to Luther Harrison Jackson and Winnie Lee Forrester Jackson.
Her Husband of 42 years, Oby Kester Payne, Son, Gary Wayne Payne, loving Daughter, Linda Gail McGee, three Brothers and five Sisters precedes her in death.
She is survived by Sons; James Lynn Payne (Katherine), David Kester Payne (Kimberly) and Daughters; Martha Nell McDonald (Gary), Joan Diane Vines (Douglas), Cathy Marie Payne and a special daughter-in-law, Carol Payne. She was proud to tell everyone she had 15 Grandchildren, 24 Great Grandchildren and 15 Great-Great Grandchildren.
Vernell was a member of The Bible Comes to Life Church in Adger, Alabama, where she was loved and affectionately known as "Queen Mother".
She attended Bagley Elementary School and later proudly received her GED in 1982. Vernell retired from Brookwood Baptist Church Daycare where she nurtured and cared for the bed baby class.
Vernell was a great cook and seamstress and enjoyed making clothes for her children and later, grandchildren. As she aged, she began to quilt and cross stitch even making quilts for each of her children. Vernell had a sense of adventure and loved to travel. Some of her favorite places were the Smokey Mountains and Disney World (x4). After expressing a lifelong wish to her brother Carlton to see the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California, they went together, a trip she spoke of often. She also enjoyed going on Ladies retreats and church trips with her Senior Friends and sitting on the front porch enjoying the beauty of the outdoors.
Vernell has left behind a legacy of love, family and kindness. She was our rock. She allowed God to use her to show the amazing power of love and family and never stopped praying for those she loved. She will be greatly missed.
