Virginia
Berry
Mar 4, 1937 — Jul 29, 2023
Rainbow City
Mrs. Virginia Sue Jinright Berry, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother took her last breath surrounded by her husband and family at home on Saturday, July 29, 2023. Daughter of the late Midas E. Jinright and Elizabeth Jinright Jetton, Virginia was born on March 4, 1937, in Birmingham, Alabama. She met the love of her life Larry Berry in junior high and they married soon after she graduated from Minor High School in 1955. They recently celebrated 68 years of marriage.
At an early age Virginia professed her faith in Jesus Christ and was an active church member of a local church throughout her life, most recently as a member of First Baptist Church Alabaster. Over the years she performed administrative duties for various large companies in Birmingham, AL, finally retiring in 1999 after over 20 years of service with State Farm Insurance.
But Virginia did not live to work, she worked to live. As a result of her adventurous spirit and "can do" attitude, no activity or challenge was too much. Virginia, Aunt Ginna or Gongie, as her grandchildren and loved ones knew her, began bowling approximately 65 years ago, joined a league in 1988 and enjoyed it so much that she traveled the country competing and creating a bowling family. She continued to bowl with the ACIPCO bowling league for the last 35 years and as recently as last week, the prize money from her latest tournament was still in her purse.
She enjoyed gardening, cooking, taking care of her home and playing games, but of all her interests, hobbies, and accomplishments her most important roles were being a godly woman, a good mother, a wonderful grandmother, and a faithful friend. She enjoyed being with her grandchildren and then great grandchildren so much that she rarely missed an opportunity to see them compete and perform in school and church activities and was present for almost every birthday party. She enjoyed challenging her grandchildren to dance-offs followed later by competitions on the Wii and Mario Kart and at one time or another taught each grandchild how to fish. Her life was as beautiful as her great grandchildren she loved so well, and her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her. She raised her family to place their faith and trust in Jesus Christ and because of that, we rejoice that she is now walking with our Lord.
Her life will forever be cherished in the hearts of her husband, Larry Berry; her children, Dennis D. Berry (Barbara) of Ashville, AL and Cindi Berry Morris (Michael) of Southside, AL; brother, Robert E. Jinright, Sr. of Wilsonville, AL and sister Brenda Jetton Oliver (Pete) of Warrior, AL; grandchildren: David Gober (Kate) of Houston, TX, Drew Morris (Kristen) of Nashville, TN, Cara Gober of Oxford, MS, Meredith Morris Dunn (Pete) of San Francisco, CA, Collin Rector (Meredith) of Atlanta, GA, Clayton Rector (Stephanie) of Odenville, AL, Anna Rae Wilson (Jeremy) of Brandon, MS and William Berry of Birmingham, AL; and 11 great grandchildren, scores of nieces and nephews she loved like her own children, and the many friends of her children and grandchildren who she cared for and mothered over the years. Along with her parents and beloved stepfather Edward Jetton, Virginia was preceded in death by her son, David Berry; her brother, William Jinright, Sr.; and her sister, Kitty Kennedy.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Friday, August 4th at First Baptist Church Alabaster in Alabaster, AL. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am with the service following at 1:00 pm. The burial will take place at Crumly Chapel UMC in Forestdale, AL at 4:30 pm. In lieu of flowers please donations may be made in Virginia's memory to First Baptist Church Alabaster or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.
